Rachael Erickson grew up in Kent, Ohio, a college town rich in liberal arts, diversity, scholars, and frankly, a lot of hippies. This environment had a large impact on the way she views the world and makes her art. Social and political issues primarily drive the inspiration for her sculptures that are largely created with glass as the principal medium. Her desire is to seek understanding and to also bring light and even humor to the sometimes darker subjects she explores. For Rachael, glass has always lent itself perfectly to this, as it`s properties can mask and reveal, highlight, and blur her subjects. Erickson`s latest works however have been more introspective; focusing instead on self-portraiture reflected through objects she has a connection to through her past. Rachael received her Bachelors of Fine Art from Kent State University in 2010 and her Masters of Fine Art from Southern Illinois University at Carbondale in the Spring of 2014, both with a focus in Glass. She has received scholarships to Pilchuck and Pittsburgh Glass Center and taught workshops at various institutions in the US. She is currently living in Louisville, Kentucky and works at a flame-working and flat glass studio downtown as well as makes her art and jewelry out of her home studio.
