Marshall Svendsen
My work is a response to material, experiences and the unconscious. My creative process begins with nonlinear thinking; I begin by sculpting Primitives, forms with individual meaning but function as interchangeable parts. As building blocks to be rearranged, replicated, dissected and combined, the Primitives are a visual language through which I can develop and visually formulate my unconscious thinking and formulated conclusions. Blending organic and geometric, they tell my narrative as well as create their own.
The content and context of my work revolves around the human experience of space, the architecture of a dwelling as it relates to our bodies as dwellings. The sculptures are rooted in the human condition. They explore how we manipulate and adapt to our environment and emotional connections around us. I juxtapose the degradation of time on my objects with the density of material. The use of bronze solidifies and memorializes the work into a relic, a new form that has accumulated and revealed antiquity. The weight of my personal narrative and the depth and wonderment of the ancient converge within these bronze forms. |
